Instance Stuck in Migrating State

Problem

The OpenStack instance is stuck in a MIGRATING state.

Environment

  • Platform9 Managed OpenStack - All Versions

Cause

The instance can get stuck in a migrating state due to a failed live migration attempt.

Resolution

  1. Check the value for live migration timeout on the hypervisor to see if a value higher than 0 is set.

hyp-1:~$ less /opt/pf9/etc/nova/conf.d/nova.conf | grep timeout
live_migration_progress_timeout = 0

  1. If the value is set to anything higher than 0, wait for the instance migration to timeout.

  2. If the value is set to 0, run the following command to set the instance in an ACTIVE state.

$ openstack server set --state active f2350d9c-8c26-4926-99ab-462bf705cd3c
