Can I Resize an Instance Across Availability Zones?

Problem

I need to resize an instance to a flavor which has metadata associated with a separate Availability Zone (AZ). Is it possible?

• Platform9 Managed OpenStack - All Versions
• Nova

Answer

No, instances cannot be resized to a flavor which would schedule the instance to a separate AZ than the one in which it was spawned initially. Although you may be able to live-migrate an instance to a host residing in a separate AZ due to an upstream bug (if using an outdated CLI) or by using the --force flag, this will not actually change the AZ of the instance, and is highly discouraged.
